Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare sieze the fire?
And what shoulder, & what art.
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
Patrick Jane was born into this world in the early seventies to carnival workers, his mother died when he was very young, too young to truly remember her, and his father raised him there along with the rest of the troupe. He lived and worked with his extended family, the group was very close and Patrick learned the strong bonds that friends and family can have with one another. He worked hard as a child, the group taught him what they knew in both book smarts and street smarts and while he was never taught formally he would have easily passed any test given to him as he was always quite an intelligent child.
As a teenager Alex, Patrick's father, grew to realise that his son had far better skills than he himself at the art of observation. The very thing he had made a career out of. It was then he decided to allow Patrick the right to be in the center stage and he showcased his sons skills as the amazing boy psychic. Patrick lavished in the attention and strived to both please his father and to push his skills to greater heights than his father had ever done with his own show. It was also then that he began to become close with the Ruskin's eldest child, Angela. As the two became closer friends Patrick realised every single day that he was growing to love her more and more. So when he decided to leave the carnival after his father tried to use him to con a dying childs grandmother into giving him every cent she had and he refused, he asked Angela to join him. And as she herself was having second thoughts about the carnival as well, she willingly did so.
The pair moved to California and things in their life were very hard at first. With no formal education between them and unable to ask their families for help, as they were still quite upset at the two of them for running off, they had to take any jobs they could. Patrick worked hard and long, taking and jobs he could at night, and trying to drum up business as a psychic during the day. As the years went on the jobs became more plentiful, and soon Patrick and Angela were able to purchase their first house together and it wasn't long afterwards that Angela discovered they were pregnant, with a girl. It was after this news that Patrick asked his long term girlfriend to marry him. They had a quiet intimate ceremony on the beach a few months later and Patrick couldn't imagine his life being any better. That is until Charlotte Anne Jane was actually born.
By the time Charlotte was a year old Patrick had become quite the household name when it came to psychics. His clients had nearly doubled and were becoming higher end. He made more money and was able to move them into a larger house in Los Angeles. His skills as a psychic brought him fame, and more than enough money to keep them comfortable. He gave private readings to rich housewives, did television shows, and began working with local police.
"Dear mister Jane, I do not like to be slandered in the media, especially by a dirty money-grubbing fraud. If you were a real psychic, instead of a dishonest little worm, you wouldn't need to open the door to see what I've done to your lovely wife and child."
-Red John, Pilot
Charlotte grew, became beautiful like her mother. They celebrated her eight birthday in a spectacular way. Pool party, horses, the whole shebang. There had never been a more spectacular party in all the Jane family history. Of course she had asked for it after all, and Patrick would have given anything to his daughter and wife. Even the moon if he could.
It wasn't soon after that however that Patrick was asked to help catch a man named Red John. He was responsible for the deaths of several people across the state of California as of late and Patrick used his skills to help the police, to help them determine what sort of man Red John was. He appeared on television, and told them of the man he assumed Red John to be. Little did he know he was making a very powerful man very, very, angry.
Patrick returned home that night to a quiet house. It was late and that was not uncommon but unlike every night he had come home before, tonight was different... A typed letter placed squarely in the center of his bedroom door spoke the words of Red John and dread, coupled with pure fear, filled every inch of Patrick Jane.
Red John had killed both his wife and daughter, all because of what he had said. All because of him.
"You're a fascinating man Patrick. Who knows what you might have achieved in this world, were you not quite so damaged."
-J.J. LaRoche, Strawberries and Cream.
Now several years later Patrick works alongside the CBI, the California Bureau of Investigation, helping to solve their cases with his skills. He no longer claims to be a psychic, he no longer claims to be anything. He works alongside Teresa Lisbon and her team helping them whenever he feels it's most convenient for him.
He's brash, and bold, and to get him to listen is like swimming up stream. Aloof and seemingly carefree Patrick treats his cases like games, solving them in the manner he most sees fit regardless if there's a bit of rule bending involved, much to the displeasure of the CBI at times.
He leaves terrible first impressions, and often times insults the very people he's assigned to help. But the fact of the matter is, he closes cases.
And each case brings him closer to the only man he truly wants to find;
Red John.
